SNIAC HOLDS ONLINE EXCHANGE WITH CHENGDU LAWYERS ON INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION

On 7 September 2026, the Secretariat of the Sydney International Arbitration Center (SNIAC) held an online exchange with the Foreign-related Legal Services Professional Committee of the Chengdu Lawyers Association (the Committee). The parties discussed Australia's legal and arbitration systems, international arbitration practice and cooperation in foreign-related legal services. They also exchanged views on establishing an ongoing communication mechanism, delivering professional training and promoting exchanges among arbitration practitioners.
The exchange brought together Lu Li, Director of the Committee; Jing Hou, Deputy Director of the Committee; Yang Yang, Secretary-General of SNIAC; and Yiwei Chen and Yifeng Wang, who is undertaking a Juris Doctor degree in Australia and served as the organiser of the exchange.
Strengthening Australia China Arbitration Dialogue
The parties exchanged views on the development of arbitration systems in Australia and China, international commercial arbitration practice, and models of cooperation between lawyers' associations and arbitral institutions. Participants observed that, as Australia-China trade and cross-border commercial activity continue to develop, a stronger mutual understanding of each country's legal system, arbitration rules and practical procedures will have considerable practical value.
SNIAC outlined its role as a Sydney-based institution serving the resolution of international commercial disputes and expressed its willingness to strengthen engagement with Chinese lawyers and arbitration practitioners through focused discussions, professional training and practice-oriented knowledge sharing.
Supporting International Legal Talent in Chengdu
The Committee has more than 70 members. According to information shared during the meeting, Chengdu has approximately 20,000 lawyers, including around 1,000 lawyers engaged in foreign-related legal services. The Committee regularly conducts professional activities in this field and maintains exchanges with arbitral institutions and legal professional organisations in Hong Kong, Singapore and other jurisdictions
Exploring Ongoing Professional Cooperation
The Committee invited SNIAC to participate in future programmes for Chengdu lawyers on foreign-related legal services, with international arbitration practitioners contributing lectures and practice-focused presentations. The parties also exchanged views on sharing information about professional activities, recommending arbitration practitioners and applications for inclusion on SNIAC's panel of arbitrators. Information about SNIAC's international arbitration activities and professional programmes may be provided to the Committee for circulation among Chengdu lawyers. The Committee may also encourage suitably qualified professionals with international arbitration experience to apply for inclusion on SNIAC's panel.
The parties intend to remain in contact and will consider holding their first focused exchange programme in the first half of 2027. The topic, speakers and format will be determined through further consultation.
Advancing Cooperation in Cross Border Dispute Resolution
The meeting strengthened mutual understanding between SNIAC and Chengdu's foreign-related legal services community and laid a sound foundation for future training, practical exchanges and professional cooperation in international arbitration. SNIAC will continue to draw on Sydney's connections with legal and commercial communities across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region to promote international arbitration knowledge and cooperation in cross-border dispute resolution, offering businesses and legal professionals a broader range of efficient international dispute resolution options.
